Overview
Toralei Stripe is a werecat student at Monster High and the leader of a troublesome trio with her best friends Purrsephone and Meowlody.
Toralei Stripe is a 2011-introduced and all-around character. She is a werecat and a student at Monster High (G1). Her best friends in life, to the point that they, for all intents and purposes are sisters, are Purrsephone (G1) and Meowlody (G1). Toralei functions as the leader of their group and together the trio are some of the worst sources of trouble at the school. Toralei is a definite mean girl, who delights in bringing others misery, but she also has a soft spot for those in need, finding no satisfaction in bringing down someone who already is down. Many of Toralei's acts are a form of revenge, even if she is the party that is wrong. She is easily hurt when people so much as imply they don't want to associate with her and her retaliation often vastly outweighs the slight.
Portrayers
Toralei Stripe is voiced by America Young in the English cartoon and by various actors in Latin American dubs.
In the English cartoon, Toralei was voiced by America Young.
In the Latin American version, she's voiced by Diana Jaramillo in volume 2 and by Analiz Sánchez since volume 3.
Character
Toralei exhibits a cat-like personality as a self-assured opportunist and manipulator, with athletic abilities and a distinctive appearance.
She has a cat-like attitude, and is self-assured, with a touch of a sarcastic purr. In "Scream Building", she stands up for the fearleaders when Cleo critiques them, but it seems like it was more about taking Cleo down a peg. She is an opportunist and a manipulator, whose clique of followers never speak for themselves and do her bidding. She causes a lot of trouble for the ghouls, whether it's by revealing their secret routine to their fearleading rivals, texting rumors about them or spreading dissent by playing to people's insecurities.
However, she shows a softer side to people in need of help, such as a troll named Teala and Cleo de Nile when she was new to fearleading. In light of this, in the cartoon, she did actually do Lagoona Blue (G1) a favor by sometimes forcing Gillington "Gil" Webber to admit he lied and finally confront his parents about their judgmental views on salt monsters.
She is also willing to cooperate with other monsters, even those she dislikes, on occasion. For instance, Toralei plays on sports teams with the main ghouls and shows very little hatred toward them, demonstrating good sportsmanship and even enjoying the experience (though she opted not to join permanently, as she "isn't much of a joiner"). She also helps with the fundraiser in the Freak du Chic webisodes, performing as a tightrope walker. In "Great Scarrier Reef", she eventually stood up for Lagoona Blue (G1) before the performance due to Kala's bullying. In "Lagoona Blue and the Big Sea Scarecation", Lagoona Blue (G1) helps Toralei cope with her fear of water, and after learning of Lagoona's stage fright, Toralei fills in for her at the talent show and is the Blue family's dance coach.
Toralei is a tall, slim, tan-furred teenage werecat with the left side of her face colored in a darker tan, followed by dark orange stripes running up on her right arm, left leg, and each sides of her face. She sports green eyes with slit pupils, thick eyelashes, dark brown brows and dark orange hair with lighter accents and black tiger-inspired stripes on the bangs that partially covers her right eye - the bangs itself being apart of an asymmetrical bob cut. As per her type of monster, she dons a signature cat tail, sharp fangs and triangle-shaped ears with her right ear having a small torn, both of them being adorned with small silver piercings (a single spiked piercing on her right ear, and both a spiked and hoop-earring on her left ear). Toralei also wears makeup consisting of thick mascara, violet and green eyeshadow, maroon-purple lipstick, and viva-magenta nail polish which are painted on her claw-like fingers, as well as her toenails.
Toralei's clothing dawned an appearance leaning more to a typical "rebellious" look with scratch motives; she wears an orange neck-bandana around her neck, and a cropped black leather jacket which includes silver spikes and viva-magenta trim on the collar and sleeves' edges (with the webisodes having viva-magenta edges). Her jacket is worn over her long, torn viva-magenta tank top which includes a pattern of black and white, tiger-inspired stripes. She wore a set of fashionably-ripped black capri leggings with viva-magenta patches covering the torns, along with open-toed black wedges which includes silver studs around the top straps, followed by both viva-magenta laces and viva-magenta soles - the soles itself having studs being the same color. Toralei accessorizes with a set of fingerless, viva-magenta biker gloves and a golden-yellow belt with the Monster High Logo on the silver buckle, hanging around her waist.
  • Feline Instincts: Toralei will at times be compelled by certain catlike instincts, which can or not be an ability at times, including extending or retracting claws and fear canines.
  • Athleticism: Toralei is very athletic.
  • Agility: As a werecat, Toralei has an increased agility and flexibility being swift and fast and always landing on her feet, which comes in handy when you're a cheerleader.
  • Voice Impersonation: Toralei has the ability to mimic voices with ease, which she uses in her mischief.
  • Dancer: She is also a skilled dancer, as shown when she coaches Lagoona’s family.
Purrhaps you've met the ghoul who really knows how to bring the drama to Monster High? Her name is Toralei, and she loves risking one of her nine lives with her BFF's Meowlody (G1) and Purrsephone. Careful not to rub her the wrong way, though. Getting on her bad side is so not recommended. She loves playing cat and mouse with other monsters, just to see what happens and sometimes that can get her into some pretty hot water. She may be a little rough around the edges, but what she lacks in tact, her pet sabertooth tiger cub Sweet Fangs, makes up for it in cuddles. So scary cute!
Relationships
Toralei has close bonds with Purrsephone and Meowlody as sisters, a pet named Sweet Fangs, and various romantic interests including Clawdeen Wolf.
Toralei lives in a steady household with two loving parents.
Five siblings are mentioned in a documentary Spectra Vondergeist (G1) made for Toralei and that likely only contains a kernel of truth. All siblings got adopted, while Toralei spent most of her life on the street. She was arrested for juvenile delinquency and sent to the pound where she met the Werecat Twins. The three were later given the chance to enroll at Monster High (G1), which they accepted.
Along with Toralei's introduction in "Scream Building" came the introduction of the twin cat girls Meowlody (G1) and Purrsephone (G1), whom Toralei in her 'Campus Stroll' diary describes to be like sisters to her. She has made enemies of many of the Monster High ghouls, declaring Cleo an enemy in "Witch Trials" after she wasn't reinstated on the squad, and causing trouble for the team during their fearleading camp and trials. In "Queen of the Scammed" she texted everyone that Cleo and the squad are going to stay overnight at Monster High on Friday the 13th. But they fail when the ghouls stay overnight. One fact is for sure: she's definitely not friends with Cleo de Nile.
Toralei and the werecat sisters are on the squad because of her older sister Nefera and is apparently still in touch with her, the diary also states that Nefera is a "cat person" which may extend their acquaintanceship, since cats are considered sacred in Egypt.
There is a possibility she's friends with Frankie, seeing how often Frankie's nice to her. TV specials with such examples include Freaky Fusion and Great Scarrier Reef. Although Toralei has taken advantage of Frankie sometimes. Howleen Wolf (G1) is also on the soccer team with her.
Toralei's pet is a female saber-toothed tiger cub, named Sweet Fangs.
Toralei was in a relationship with Rocco from Granite City High. Supposedly, their mutual penchant for playing dirty if that's what it takes to win is what attracts them to each other.
In the "A Night in Scare-adise: Prom 2014" dance, Torelai says she doesn't understand why all the students are so excited for prom, that it's so undignified, and Jackson Jekyll (G1) says that's too bad, and prom sounds kinda fun to him. Clawdeen Wolf (G1) said she looked happy when they were dancing.
While she did originally show interest in Kieran Valentine due to their shared love of scheming, she was upset with him after he used her as a shield to avoid being splashed himself.
She and Operetta (G1) fought for the affection of Archer.
Currently, she is in a relationship with Clawdeen Wolf (G1).
